Carl Edward Sagan
1934 - 1996 aged 62 (pneumonia following illness)
Best known for the hugely popular television series ‘Cosmos: A Personal Voyage’. The series was shown in over 60 countries. Sagan authored many popular science books as well as a great number of scientific papers.
Key research was on extra-terrestrial life - he demonstrated how amino acids could form from basic chemicals when eradiated.
